London Transport Guide

The one great thing about being a student in London is the low fare travel costs. With a Student Photo Card you’ll enjoy 30% off the regular price and you can apply online or at a tube ticket office.

tube and dlr

Despite London’s grand scale its reliable public transport system (the over-ground, DLR, tubes and buses) enables a commuter to reach point A to B in a surprisingly short period of time. Convenience really is only an Oyster Card away. It’ll be your best-friend, providing you don’t lose it, and it works with all forms of transport. You can pick up a tube map from any station and all downloadable maps are only a click away. The TFL site has all information and a rather convenient journey planner.

bus

When night falls, so too do the transport options. If you run you can catch your last train at 12:30am, but in the likely even that you miss it the bus will eventually arrive! It’s cheaper than the tube and when it’s light out, it’s a great way to see London BUT be warned it moves at a relatively slower pace. So always remember to add extra time for bus trips.

cycle hire

If you’re lucky enough to get a sunny day the city’s new Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme is another way to get around. There are docking stations all over the place, which means once you’ve arrived at your destination, returning the two wheeled companion will be the easiest thing you do all day. Journeys under half an hour are FREE and it’s Oyster compatible!

All London Transport information can be accessed at the Transport for London website.
